It shouldn't cost $1537 & hours of paperwork every 2 years to qualify to run a sidewalk shoeshine business in DC. In far too many cases, occupational licensing laws do nothing but put an unfair obstacle in the way of those who want to earn a living for themselves. This video tells the moving story of Joseph "Ego" Brown, and it should serve as a cautionary tale for us as we think about occupational licenses. We should have a shared sense that the American Idea is that we want all of our people to be thriving and vibrant and independent and free. One way we can do this is by setting in place government policies that protect the marketplace and allow as many people as possible to participate. That's why I teamed up with Senator Mike Lee to introduce new legislation that would attempt to change how business is done in D.C. to model how it can and should be done elsewhere. No government bureaucrat is needed to help you know which shoe shine to pick.
